2 Tips for Finding a Responsible Dog Breeder

Posted on: 27 May 2016

If you are thinking about getting a pure-breed dog you want to buy it from a responsible breeder. You want to do that because you will know that your new dog is going to be as genetically healthy as possible.

A responsible breeder will do genetic testing on the dog's parents before they are bred to make sure that no genetic diseases or particular breed problems are going to cause problems. The breeders will also make sure that the parents are also healthy, which will let you know that your puppy is going to be healthy when you get them. A responsible breeder will meet with you before you are able to take the dog home and screen you to make sure that you and your dog are going to be a good mix.

So how do you find a good breeder to get your dog from?

Contact a Rescue Group

One thing you can do is talk to a rescue group. The people who run those rescue groups specialize in just the breed that you want. They should have a list of people who breed that particular dog. The rescue group can point you toward breeders in your area. They can also suggest people whom you may not want to buy a dog from; for example, there are some breeders who will only sell dogs to show.

Talk to the AKC

The AKC stands for the American Kennel Club. While the AKC doesn't tend to recommend one breeder over another, there are several ways they can help you. One is that they can connect you with the local AKC club in your area. The local club should have area breeders are part of the club. The club should be able to give you some particular recommendations. If you go to one of the club's meetings, you can talk to the breeders on a more casual basis, which will let you know if you click with the breeder. The breeder may also bring some of their dogs to the meetings, especially if the meeting is set up as a training session. That will let you observe the dogs and the breeder with the dogs.

Buying a pure-breed dog is expensive. You want to make sure that you spend your money wisely and buy your new dog from a responsible breeder so that you get the best, healthiest dog possible. For more information, contact services like Karla's Pet Rendezvous.

Keeping My Pet Happy While I Travel

When my employer asked me to travel abroad for a year straight, I realized that it would be hard to take my pet along. Since I didn't know where I was going to be and what I was going to be doing, it seemed a little risky to pack my dog on a plane and hope for the best. Instead, I looked around for a pet boarding center who could take care of my dog while I was away. I was able to find an incredible business that handled long-term pet care, and they offered everything I was looking for. Check out this blog for information about pet daycare.
